About the Relay For Life

Began in...

1985 by Dr. Gordy Klott from Tacoma, WA. He was a surgeon who wanted to make a difference in support of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Klott...

Ran around a track for twenty-four hours straight to symbolize how cancer never sleeps. He raised $27,000 during the first year.

The Next Year...

Dr. Klott put together a committee to host the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. Later, it was adopted by the American Cancer Society and became the Relay For Life.

Since Then...

Over $5 billion has been raised through 6000 different events across 20 different countries with over 4 million people participating annually.

What People Have To Say

"Having never attended a Relay, I was overwhelmed by the emotional impact of the experience. Watching my mom walk around the "Survivor's Lap" was truly moving and inspirational."

Sabra Sherry
Relay For Life Participant

"Looking back on my life when I was battling cancer, I realized I received a great deal of support, and now I wanted to give back and return the favor. This is why I decided to volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society."

Kyle Dupuis
Cancer Survivor & Volunteer

"It's a great event, and the community and environment is excellent. I had the opportunity to start leading as a team captain and had the pleasure of making a broad spectrum of friends."
